Prescription Drug Abuse
Prescription Drug Abuse is a growing problem both nationally and in Gratiot County. Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) estimates that of the more than four billion prescriptions written annually in the United States, up to 40 percent of drugs dispensed outside of hospitals aren't taken, generating some 200 million pounds of unused pharmaceuticals each year. Unused patient medications are a contributor to accidental poisonings, which have involved an 80 percent increase in U.S. deaths from accidental overdose of narcotics in a recent six-year period.

Yellow Jug, Old Drugs Program
Prescription Drug disposal of non-Narcotic medication is now available in Gratiot County! Family Fare Pharmacy in Alma and St. Louis Pharmacy in St. Louis are collaborating with the Great Lakes Clean Water Action Organization to offer the Yellow Jug, Old Drugs program. This program not only gets unused medication out of our community medicine cabinets, but also helps protect our drinking water and wildlife through appropriate disposal. A study by the US Geological Survey concluded that 80% of streams sampled contained detectable levels of compounds found in common medications. Do not put unused medicine in the trash or flush down the toliet. Please help us promote this program by printing and displaying this flyer at your place of work.
