Gratiot County Facts - The Good, the Bad, and Ugly

Like most communities, underage drinking - and other drug use - impact the youth in their community.  Here are some facts taken from the Prevention Needs Assessment in November 2008.  All six Gratiot County school district participated in survey.  For more information on alcohol and other drug use in Gratiot County please follow the Strategic Plan link. 

The Good

  • 82% of Gratiot County 6th graders choose NOT to drink.
  • 58% of Gratiot County 8th graders choose NOT to drink.
  • 40% of Gratiot County 10th graders choose NOT to drink.
  • 23% of Gratiot County 12th graders choose NOT to drink.
  • In the last 30 days, 72% of Gratiot County 10th graders have chosen NOT to drink.
  • In the last 30 days, 58% of Gratiot County 12th graders have chosen NOT to drink.

The Bad

  • 18% of Gratiot County 6th graders have used alcohol at least once in their lifetime.
  • 42% of Gratiot County 8th graders have used alcohol at least once in their lifetime.
  • 60% of Gratiot County 10th graders have used alcohol at least once in their lifetime.
  • 77% of Gratiot County 12th graders have used alcohol at least once in their lifetime.

The Ugly

  •  6th graders who have used alcohol began at an average age of 10.3 years old.
  • 18% of Gratiot County 8th graders who drank alcohol got it at home with parent permission.
  • 16.5% of Gratiot County 10th graders had 5 or more alcoholic drinks in a row in the past two weeks.
  • 27.5% of Gratiot County 12th graders had 5 or more alcoholic drinks in a row in the past two weeks
